Overview

Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) is the practice of providing intravenous antimicrobial therapy in settings outside of the hospital including the patient’s home, clinic, hemodialysis center, or skilled nursing facility. The purpose is to treat multidrug resistant infections with no oral options and to treat specific infections that require IV therapy (example: endocarditis, osteomyelitis). OPAT offers effective, shorter hospital stays, and decreased costs.  

Program

Our UCLA Health OPAT program is designed for patients who need long-term intravenous antibiotics. 

Program Goals

• Deliver safe, cost effective and high-quality patient care for patients discharged on IV antimicrobials
• Prevent unnecessary readmissions and worsened infection
• To reduce the 30-day readmission rate and improve care in patients discharged with IV antibiotics

Service Locations

• Patient's homes with assistance from a home health company and a home infusion company
• Skilled Nursing Facilities
• Hemodialysis units
• UCLA Health Clinics (Evaluation & Treatment Center, Santa Monica)
